Welcome! I'm Sarah. I grew up in Kalamazoo and Richland, Michigan. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education and a specialization in Ceramics and Metalworking from the Gwen Frostic School of Art at Western Michigan University, and received my MA in Art Education from the same institution. I was a ceramicist in residence at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts in 2018/2019. I have been teaching art at Portage Northern High School since 2013. I look forward to going to work each day with such amazing students and staff!
Philosophy of Education |
|
In a society that is increasingly focused on technology and the core curriculum, students who are provided with the opportunity to creatively express themselves become broader thinkers and higher achievers. By using the rich visual and tactile learning techniques associated with the arts, I hope to allow students the opportunity to expand their minds and gain skills that apply not just to the visual arts but to all walks of life, academic and otherwise. As a teacher, I strive to create an approachable, diverse and highly relevant learning environment for my students where strengths are lauded, a positive atmosphere is fostered, and expression seeds development.
Since 2011, myself and elementary art teacher Michelle Trickey have offered a fun, affordable summer art camp for kids in the Kalamazoo area!
